While art, whether it be drawing or painting or creating in clay, was my first love all through my younger years, after high school I went into a secretarial course at college. The following year I left school altogether, married and started my family.
As a stay-at-home-Mom I found my creative outlet in crafts of all descriptions, and in cake decorating and the 'confectionery arts' which I also taught for more than 25 years from my home. Many of my greatest friends today were introduced to me as they sat at my dining room table decades ago in those classes.
About 2008, I set aside the icing bags and picked up the paint brushes again! At the same time I began taking pictures with the intent of using them as reference for future paintings. As it turned out, I found photography could be a challenging art form in itself - and I liked the instant gratification!! Besides, given several lifetimes, I could never paint all the pictures I'd like. My camera accompanies me wherever I go and a simple walk can turn into hours of inspiration. Thankfully, digital technology offers the freedom to experiment to my heart's content.
Although I didn't actually realize I had a 'theme' to my work, after so many people commented at various shows that there is a peaceful feeling in my space, I have come to recognize that most of my paintings are very much inspired by the places I wander and view, usually on solitary walks or drives. They are the places where I enjoy the peaceful, quiet communion with the natural world that surrounds us. Butterflies have also become favourite subjects.
